This course covers the major topics of mechanics, including momentum and energy conservation, kinematics, Newton‰ŰŞs laws and equilibrium. The major emphasis is to develop critical analysis, problem solving and scientific reasoning skills by considering numerous different systems and interactions, solving problems and discussion. It uses a systematic approach based on modeling systems by application of basic physics principles, making assumptions, utilizing multiple representations (not just mathematical) in order to become proficient at problem solving. Lab work is required and is designed to help students develop a questioning approach to physical situations, distinguishing the significant behaviors from the less significant behaviors of a system under study.Login: guest_oclPassword: ocl

This website is a segment of a Department of Labor grant awarded to the Eastern Iowa Community Colleges (EICC) of Clinton, Muscatine, and Scott. These simulations, developed by a local Quad City e-Learning Company Lucid Way (which are approximately from 2-9 minutes long) are used as part of their curriculum to help students quickly and thoroughly grasp the concepts being presented in a visual format.

Learning 3D simulations focus on engineering topics and cover automation & robotics, electrical & motor control, process control or renewable energy. Each simulation can be watched directly from the website, downloaded, or embedded into the online courses This site is managed by: ATEEC. (Source: http://engineertech.org/about/)

Using the Extend 'connect-the-components' visual programming, students can model and simulate ecosystems including social and economic forces as well as study parameter variations to develop an understanding of ecosystem function and productivity.By making 'what if...' changes in the model, the effects of various proposed decisions about the environment can then be shown.EDM includes three ecological systems: Ponds, Grasslands, and Logging. Students can predict results of changes in the models and explore relationships.First, you diagram a model of the system showing parts and connections among them. For example, components of the model, such as the sun, are placed on the computer screen. Each component is linked to the others with a mathematical relationship, such as the transfer of the sun's energy to plants.Values are entered into block dialog boxes to characterize the interactions of the components, such as the amount of sunlight at a particular location or the initial number of bluegill in a pond. When the simulation is run, you can see the growth curves of the various components of the system.

This activity begins with sections that help students to understand basic principles of genetics, including (1) how genotype influences phenotype via the effects of genes on protein structure and function and (2) how genes are transmitted from parents to offspring through the processes of meiosis and fertilization. Then, a coin flip activity models the probabilistic nature of inheritance and Punnett square predictions; this helps students understand why the characteristics of children in many real families deviate from Punnett square predictions. Additional concepts covered include polygenic inheritance, incomplete dominance, and how a new mutation can result in a genetic condition that was not inherited. This activity helps students meet the Next Generation Science Standards.

Genetics Construction Kit is a simulation of a classic Mendelian genetics laboratory. It provides students with a set of organisms with unknown patterns of inheritance, and gives them the tools to design and perform a series of experiments to discover these inheritance patterns.Students will be able to cross the unknown organisms and analyze their crosses in ways much like those used by practicing scientists.GCK provides several tools for analyzing and organizing data: * Vial Summary Chart summarizes the contents of a vial or set of vials * Cross Matrix records the crosses made so far and indexes the vials generated by these crosses * Chi Squared Worksheet allows students to test whether observed numbers differ significantly from the ratio expected under a given hypothesis.GCK comes with several predefined problems designed to present a different aspect of genetics or to illustrate a particular problem. In addition, by using the problem editing utility, it is possible to customize a problem to meet your specific needs.

Technology Design: The Movement of Means
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

In order to promote students’ conceptual understanding and learning experience in introductory statistics, a technology task, which focuses on the probability distribution in which means are defined, was created using TinkerPlots, an exploratory data analysis and modeling software. The targeted audiences range from senior high school grade levels to college freshmen who are starting their introductory course in statistics. Students will be guided to explore and discover the movement behaviors of means of a set of numbers randomly generated from a fixed range of values characterized by a predetermined probability distribution. The cognitive, mathematical, technological and pedagogical natures of the task, as well as its association with the statistics education framework based on the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) by the American Statistical Association, will be elaborated. A brief discussion on what cognitive design principles this task satisfies will also be provided at the end.
