OER for Introductory Technical Writing

The "OER Guide for WR 227 Instructors: Using Open Educational Resources (OERs) in WR 227 Courses" aims to help instructors make sense of and sort the massively decentralized and varying content of existing OERs available to support technical and professional writing courses. This guide is intended as a resource for introductory technical writing course instructors to adapt an existing course to integrate OER resources, or, to build a new course with all-OER student resources. This guide was developed for the specific use of WR 227 instructors at Portland State University and across Oregon; however, the material in the guide or its presentation is not tied to any particular course and is therefore also useful for instructors of introductory technical writing and professional writing courses more broadly.

Open Educational Resources (OER) offer opportunities for increasing equity and access to high-quality K–12 education. Many state education agencies now have offices devoted to identifying and using OERs and other digital resources in their states. To help states, districts, teachers, and other users determine the degree of alignment of OERs to the Common Core State Standards, and to determine aspects of quality of OERs, Achieve has developed eight rubrics in collaboration with leaders from the OER community.

The OER Toolkit aims to improve equitable access to open learning resources and services to college students by providing a province-wide academic support platform for faculty to use while designing courses and assignments. The Toolkit is a one-stop guide to open educational resources, providing faculty and library staff with tools and information to understand, engage with, create, and sustain OER in their work and practice.

The Toolkit is designed to be used by anyone involved with OER at an academic institution, whether you are part of a team that is collaborating to create OER, a library staff member who is supporting OER development and use, an advocate for OER at your institution, or an instructor seeking to incorporate OER and open pedagogy in the classroom. The primary purpose of this Toolkit is to support faculty and library staff at Ontario colleges; however, it is openly available for use beyond the Ontario college community.

Carrie and Kelly’s OER grant project will create open materials for Math 098. Community colleges throughout Oregon have been planning and implementing MTH 098 since 2014 based on recommendations from the developmental education redesign workgroup. The course was created to provide a shortened, more appropriate path for students to take MTH 105 and earn an Associate of Arts Transfer degree. Some institutions, such as Clackamas Community College, include the added benefit of allowing for MTH 105 to serve as a prerequisite to MTH 243, extending the pathway for students.

Their goal is to create materials that:

- Are learner-centered
- Readily integrate group work and collaboration
- Create opportunities for students to make critical thinking a habit of mind
- Acknowledge and respect common anxieties, personalities, and professional goals of students in the “alternate pathway”.

It also contains hyperlinks to websites about vacations, food, and more. It is meant to be a supplement to in-class instruction. If you are new to TPRS, check out the methodology before jumping in. In this Science NetLinks lesson, students are introduced to the basics of how a baby grows inside its mother until its birth. They then consider and discuss the birthing process. Then students are led into the third part of the lesson, which focuses on the early years of infancy. They are prompted to think about the kinds of basic needs infants have and the critical role adults play in ensuring a baby's healthy physical, emotional, and cognitive development.

AP Economics teacher Riza Laudin facilitates frequent debates with her students on a variety of subject-area topics. In this video, students debate the potential privatization of social security. Debates begin with a five minute introduction by the pro- and anti-debaters. During the debate, Ms. Laudin focuses on what type of critical feedback she will provide to best support students in improving. In addition, the rest of the class has an opportunity to pose questions and provide feedback following the debatersŐ rebuttals.

Insects are an excellent resource for science education. Many insects are easily maintained in the classroom and can happily thrive despite being handled and kept in captivity. The remarkable diversity in form and function of commonly found insects promotes interest and enthusiasm in observing the natural world. Instead of going through the normal court system, students are tried in a youth court by a jury of their peers. The jury hears the case (sometimes tried by student lawyers) and decides on the consequences for the student on trial. The program has seen incredible success.
