The ELC professional development model was designed to improve the quality of teacher candidates’ Practicum field placements and align teaching in field placements with Learning Standards used in the teacher education program.

Teams of four educators from varied settings worked in a Practicum placement setting for one semester to improve their teaching and align it with Learning Standards. An action research approach improved teaching challenges teams faced. Research articles were read to improve teams’ teaching challenges by implementing one agreed strategy. Teams video-recorded, assessed, and reflected on the impact of the strategy on their teaching, on teacher candidates’ learning and on children’s learning.

This text compiles six case studies from this model to illustrate how teaching challenges were improved. Appropriate for practiced educators as well as educators in training, this text provides a real world look into applying Learning Standards in early childhood classrooms.

As authors, we chose the subject for this book because of what early childhood teacher candidates told us about their confusion between the theory they were taught in college methods classes, and, the teaching practices they often experienced during the Practicum field placement. We became interested in this subject because the teacher candidates were questioning, as good teacher candidates do, a troubling disconnect between early childhood theory and associated practice in classrooms. We were motivated to write this book because we wanted to share our model of professional development, designed to support both pre-service teacher candidates and, in-service educators together, during the Practicum field placement. Our lead author secured a grant to investigate these concerns and to implement a new professional development model designed to overcome them. The substance of this book reminds all of us, that in early childhood education, educators’ change through professional development, for improved practice that benefits children’s learning, is a constant.

ENGL 1010: English Composition I. Introduces students to the critical thinking, reading, writing, and rhetorical skills required in the college/university and beyond, including citation and documentation, writing as a process, audience awareness; and writing effective essays.
The course utilizes a scaffolding approach as well as cross-curricular resources and assignments to focus the course around a central theme: Socio-Political Themes in Pop Culture. All resources are OER, including the integration of textbooks: Waymaker: Introduction to College Composition by Lumen and Media, Society, Culture, and You by Mark Poepsel. As well, assorted media sources are utilized, including video (documentaries, interviews, lectures, films), photography, and social media apps.

ENGL 1020: English Composition II: An Integrated Media Approach. Continuation and further development of material and strategies introduced in English Composition I. Primary emphasis on composition, including research strategies, argumentative writing, evaluation, and analysis. The course utilizes a scaffolding approach as well as cross-curricular resources and assignments to focus the course around a central theme: Analysis of Film Genres. All resources are OER, including the integration of textbooks: Waymaker: Introduction to College Composition by Lumen and Exploring Movie Construction and Production by John Reich.

ESL Grammar Levels 1-5

These books were created by Don Bissonnette for students and teachers of English as a Second Language (ESL). I taught ESL and EFL for 45 years and wanted to provide books and resource material for FREE to anyone who might want or need formal English. In these books, which were based on grammar, one can also find vocabulary, some pronunciation, punctuation, capitalization, and model paragraphs.

Earth science is the study of our home planet and all of its components: its lands, waters, atmosphere, and interior. This open textbook was the result of a remix of pre-existing open materials collected and reviewed by Molly Zhou and David Brown. Learning theories covered include the theories of Piaget, Bandura, Vygotsky, Kohlberg, Dewey, Bronfenbrenner, Eriksen, Gardner, Bloom, and Maslow.

This books lays the foundation for prospective teachers to learn about various teaching methodologies and covers material typically found in many teacher training programs. Chapters in the text can be assigned either from beginning to end, as with a conventional printed book, or they can be selected in some other sequence to meet the needs of particular students or classes. In general the first half of the book focuses on broader questions and principles taken from psychology per se, and the second half focuses on somewhat more practical issues of teaching. But the division between “theory” and “practice” is only approximate; all parts of the book draw on research, theory, and practical wisdom wherever appropriate. Chapter 2 is about learning theory, and Chapter 3 is about development; but as we point out, these topics overlap with each other as well as with the concerns of daily teaching. Chapter 4 is about several forms of student diversity (what might be called individual differences in another context), and Chapter 5 is about one form of diversity that has become prominent in schools recently—students with disabilities. Chapter 6 is about motivation, a topic that is heavily studied by psychological researchers, but that also poses perennial challenges to classroom teachers.

EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY (3-3-0) Prerequisites: C or better in PSYC 2120 or 2060. The application of psychology to teaching and learning. Emphasis is on practical application in the school setting. Ten hours in field experience required. Designed primarily for education majors. Others admitted at the discretion of the instructor.
