This course explores the world’s visual arts, focusing on the development of visual awareness, assessment, and appreciation by examining a variety of styles from various periods and cultures while emphasizing the development of a common visual language. The materials are meant to foster a broader understanding of the role of visual art in human culture and experience from the prehistoric through the contemporary. This is an Open Educational Resource (OER), an openly licensed educational material designed to replace a traditional textbook.

Adapting Materials
For ease of adapting the materials, editable files are provided. Under additional files, you can download ZIP files of the presentations in PowerPoint and the reading lists in Word, as well as a Word document of sample sketchbook assignment topics. Presentations and reading lists are separated by lessons within the ZIP files.

Fundamentals of Business, Second Edition (2018) is an 372-page open education resource intended to serve as a no-cost, faculty customizable primary text for one-semester undergraduate introductory business courses. It covers the following topics in business: Teamwork; economics; ethics; entrepreneurship; business ownership, management, and leadership; organizational structures and operations management; human resources and motivating employees; managing in labor union contexts; marketing and pricing strategy; hospitality and tourism, accounting and finance, and personal finances. The textbook was designed for use in Virginia Tech’s Pamplin College of Business introductory level business course, MGT1104 Foundations of Business and is shared under a Creative Commons Non-Commercial ShareAlike 4.0 license.

Course DescriptionHuman rights, an idea that has come to mean a set of core practices and values that society believes are inherent to each and every individual, was not a construct that sprang from a vacuum. In this course we will address the development of the term human rights, from ancient times through to the present day. As a class, we will focus on the religious, moral, and social implications of believing in such inalienable rights, the development of the concept of individual rights and responsibilities, the conflicts and complications that made contemporary human rights what they, and the 20th and 21st century struggles that have pushed human rights near to a breaking point.As a history course covering a single topic on a global scale, this course will entail a significant amount of reading, and will focus on the tools and practices necessary for successful comprehension of historical materials, both in the primary and secondary form. Through this class, students will learn to differentiate between primary and secondary historical sources, successfully deconstruct both sets of materials, and understand how to summarize and integrate individual sources with the larger historical narrative of human rights. Finally, this course will rely solely on Open-Source Educational Materials, grounding the importance of the democratization of knowledge.

This is a class designed to get to the heart of fiction by starting with the simplest of myths, moving into short stories, and finally finishing with a novel.

We'll look at the beginning origins of the tale and see how it slowly grew from being something largely contained in plot devices to being something more attuned to character studies before finally showing you how bonkers some fiction can be.

Many elements of our world will be played with and looked at through different view points in an attempt to stir something in the student. As Kafka said, "A book must be an axe for the frozen sea within us."

We'll look at how the short story isn't so much different or a new thing, but is often the one most overlooked. People celebrate poems and Shakespearean plays, and the greatest novels of the time, as they should...but too often we overlook the brilliance of the short story, yet...for many of us, it is the preferred style to enjoy. And in many ways, it is just a poem in prose form, and as Poe said, it was intended to create a trance-like state, "an exaltation of the soul which cannot be long sustained."

A license is a document that specifies what can and cannot be done with a work. It grants permissions and states restrictions. Broadly speaking, an open license is one that grants permission to access, re-use and redistribute a work with few or no restrictions (definition from Openedefinition.org).

In previous modules we had a chance to discuss the background of open licenses and what they are. We learned that Creative Commons (CC) is the most widely used open license for open educational resources. In this module, we will discuss CC licenses– what they are, to what they pertain, and how to mark our works with them.
