CLUE: Chemistry, Life, the Universe and Everything

We designed this book to help you attain a confident, competent, and coherent understanding of basic chemistry, in particular of the chemistry associated with organisms and their origins. That said, this is not a chemistry for biologists or non-scientists book but rather an approach to the difficult and often counterintuitive ideas at the heart of chemistry, for an intelligent and engaged student who, often quite reasonably, finds these ideas unbelievable, arbitrary, or incoherent. Our goal is to assist you in developing an understanding of the foundations of chemistry, so that you can apply these ideas to a range of new situations.

Materials integral to the CLUE curriculum but that are not covered exhaustively in the text are:

Common chemistry calculations, illustrated by YouTube videos, including:
Stoichiometry;
Energy, frequency, and wavelength conversions;
Mass energy conversions;
Thermochemistry, including specific heat, bond energy and entropy, enthalpy, and Gibbs energy;
Equilibrium calculations, pH and Ka;
Reaction rates and rate law determinations; and
Buffers and linked chemical reaction energy changes.

Common skills, including:
Electron configurations, particularly to determine the number of valence electrons;
Drawing Lewis structures;
VESPR;
Assigning oxidation numbers; and
Using curved arrows to predict the outcome of simple reactions.

Table of Contents:

1. Atoms
2. Electrons and Orbitals
3. Elements, Bonding, and Physical Properties
4. Heterogeneous Compounds
5. Systems Thinking
6. Solutions
7. A Field Guide to Chemical Reactions
8. How Far? How Fast?
9. Reaction Systems

Chemistry: Atoms First is a peer-reviewed, openly licensed introductory textbook produced through a collaborative publishing partnership between OpenStax and the University of Connecticut and UConn Undergraduate Student Government Association.

This title is an adaptation of the OpenStax Chemistry text and covers scope and sequence requirements of the two-semester general chemistry course. Reordered to fit an atoms first approach, this title introduces atomic and molecular structure much earlier than the traditional approach, delaying the introduction of more abstract material so students have time to acclimate to the study of chemistry. Chemistry: Atoms First also provides a basis for understanding the application of quantitative principles to the chemistry that underlies the entire course.

Chemistry I course is a general introductory chemistry course, it has important aspects that are needed to understand the organic chemistry in this module. The knowledge of bonding, the difference between ionic and covalent bonding, electronic configuration of different atoms; all these aspects are vital for a good understanding of this module on organic chemistry. Chemistry II course is even a more relevant prerequisite for this module because it had a unit on introductory organic chemistry where at the end of that particular unit you were expected to be able to

1. Classify types of organic compounds based on functional groups.

2. Name different classes of organic compounds using the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) system of nomenclature.

3. Write structural formulas of different isomeric compounds.

4. Relate properties and reactions of organic compounds to functional groups.
