The book "Introductory Business Statistics" by Thomas K. The goal of this textbook is not to make you an expert. True expertise in any field is a years-long endeavor. Here I will survey some of the basic topics of chemistry. This survey should give you enough knowledge to appreciate the impact of chemistry in everyday life and, if necessary, prepare you for additional instruction in chemistry. Throughout each chapter, I present two features that reinforce the theme of the textbook—that chemistry is all around you. The first is a feature titled, appropriately, “Chemistry Is Everywhere.” Chemistry Is Everywhere” focuses on the personal hygiene products that you may use every morning: toothpaste, soap, and shampoo, among others. These products are chemicals, aren’t they? Ever wonder about the chemical reactions that they undergo to give you clean and healthy teeth or shiny hair? I will explore some of these chemical reactions in future chapters. But this feature makes it clear that chemistry is, indeed, everywhere. The other feature focuses on chemistry that you likely indulge in every day: eating and drinking. In the “Food and Drink App,” I discuss how the chemistry of the chapter applies to things that you eat and drink every day. Carbonated beverages depend on the behavior of gases, foods contain acids and bases, and we actually eat certain rocks. (Can you guess which rocks without looking ahead?) Cooking, eating, drinking, and metabolism—we are involved with all these chemical processes all the time. These two features allow us to see the things we interact with every day in a new light—as chemistry.

The LATEX source, Java source, and build scripts for the book are available to download from the author’s website and also, more importantly, on a reliable source code management site.

Open Modernisms is an open, Creative-Commons-licensed online platform that allows teachers and scholars to build custom anthologies of out-of-copyright primary materials for the period 1850–1950. . It uses a custom-built Islandora module to host a library of documents from which users can select and rearrange in whatever order they like; add their own notes and introductory or contextualizing materials; and output in a numbered sequence of files for digital distribution and/or printing. The site and its materials are open access, and the code for the site, based on already-existing open-source software, is hosted on Github for easy repurposing and distribution. The code can be adapted for any discipline. Create. Mix. Share.

Psychology is described as a science studying how hereditary (nature) and experiential (nurture) variables interact to influence the thoughts, feelings, and behavior of individuals. The remainder of the text will be organized in sections entitled “Mostly Nature” (Biological Psychology; Sensation & Perception; Motivation & Emotion), “Mostly Nurture” (Direct Learning; Indirect Learning (i.e., observational learning and language); Cognition), and “Nature/Nurture” (Human Development; Personality; Social Psychology; Maladaptive Behavior; Professional Psychology and Human Potential).

This Handbook is based on the Science Education Initiative (SEI), a transformative initiative aimed at changing STEM teaching practices in university settings. The SEI was successfully implemented in two institutions (University of Colorado Boulder and The University of British Columbia) over a period of 10 years. The SEI centered on department-based Discipline-Based Education Specialists (DBESs), disciplinary experts with training in the science of teaching and learning who serve as catalysts of change within departments. The two SEIs have influenced the teaching of hundreds of faculty and the learning of tens of thousands of students per year by promoting the use of evidence-based teaching practices in STEM. These teaching practices are informed by research on teaching and learning, and often include some element of active learning.

This Handbook shares the accumulated wisdom of practice in how to effectively implement a model of change based on the SEI. It provides advice to the three main stakeholders in such initiatives: the initiative leaders who provide central direction and management, the departmental leaders who help lead the activities and engage faculty, and the Discipline-Based Education Specialists who partner with faculty to transform courses.
