As part of the Worcester State University OER initiative in Spring 2017, Dr. Elizabeth Osborne created and translated course materials for her SP 322, Advanced Spanish Composition II, course. Materials have been divided into peer review (revisión por pares) handouts, close reading activities (actividades de lectura detallada) and other miscellaneous materials. The materials included here are by no means exhaustive, but they serve as a starting point to making education affordable and to filling the gap in Spanish-language OER for upper division courses.

Liter·Alia: Hispanic Literatures in their Context. A Digital Annotated Edition of Spanish Works of Fiction As a Tool to Teach Spanish Literature to Second Language Students

Frequently, students of Spanish as a second language struggle when they must read works of fiction. This critical situation on reading comprehension often happens because learners have a limited knowledge of vocabulary, and they lack enough historical and aesthetic contextual background data. As a solution, creating a tailored online digital annotated edition can help to develop comprehension skills, support informative and critical reading, and enhance writing discussions. This can be reached when we build around a particular text a net of multimodal interaction fueled by audiovisual resources, written explanations, and topic-based enquiries which are placed as annotations linked to meaningful keywords in the main text.

The materials in this project are specifically designed for a third-year Spanish Writing course, offering guidance to instructors on how to develop each of the four modules that constitute the course: Description, narration, argumentation, and exposition.

For each of the modules, a variety of resources are presented, including peer review training sessions, classroom activities, handouts to guide students’ writing processes, and peer review guidelines. These resources follow the methodology of writing through workshops (“Talleres”) and may be used in support of the current course materials (i.e., textbook “Taller de Escritores”).

The OER resources are also helpful for students, because they provide clear guidance on how to write and peer review each of the essays, and they further specify the assessment rubrics according to the curricular contents of the of the Spanish Writing course.

For both, the teacher and student alike, this Spanish I book is intended for a first-year, college Elementary Spanish I level. It also attempts to make the study of a language in this case, Spanish, more than another required subject. Eliminating the artificial limitation of the traditional textbook, offers the teacher and the student the ability to tailor the content to their own needs. Also, this book tries to show the value of learning a second language from a high quality pedagogical criteria at a low cost solution.

Features include:

Clearly defined objectives in communication, culture, and grammar are given at the start of each chapter, and summary exercises.
Many activities are provided in a practical context in which to practice.
Concise grammar explanations address the level of language acquisition for non-major language students. Carefully chosen communicative goals focus on low to intermediate ACTFL oral proficiency skills.
The book recycles material on a regular basis to encourage the student to see the value of continual learning progression rather than testability.

The title of this book is Trayectos, which in Spanish means pathways. We have developed the material in this volume to guide your learning process and your pathway of discovery of the Spanish-speaking world with the objective to prepare you linguistically and culturally to use Spanish to communicate with speakers in this country and around the world.

Each instructional module in Trayectos will offer cultural and linguistic information, and ample opportunities to use Spanish in three modes of communication: Interpersonal (oral interactions with other speakers), interpretive (reading and listening comprehension), and presentational (writing). Also, we will help you make connections between grammatical forms and the social contexts in which you use them.

In this instructional module, we will start learning about Hispanic Texas. Can you name some places in Texas with Spanish names? What do you know about the Hispanic presence in Texas? Write down some ideas, and then discuss them with the rest of your class.

Are you ready to start your learning process? Entonces, ¡comencemos a descubrir! (So, let’s start our discovery!)

You have learned two words in a second language just by reading the title of the book. Think about that for a moment and reflect upon your prior foreign language experiences. Often, students enter language classes with previously acquired skills, be they from secondary school or another college. Many say, “I have studied Spanish for years and don’t know how to speak or write it,” while others are a bit anxious about taking a second language for the first time, but all are overwhelmed by the expensive textbooks and online packages that don’t seem to be practical or relevant. We sought to change these common complaints by creating materials that take a new approach to learning a second language based upon the skills that we deem most useful and that will enable our students to confidently express themselves in Spanish. The text is designed for beginning Spanish language students. The pedagogical approach incorporates the flipped classroom methodology.

Perhaps you remembered what the title of your book means from your previous experiences with Spanish. That is a great start! As you begin the equivalent of a second semester Spanish course with these materials, some of you might think about how long it has been since you studied Spanish while others may come to the class with some background knowledge. We want you to know this book has been designed with many types of learners in mind. Our goals were to address the need for students to achieve the ability to communicate in written and spoken form. We sought to address a common statement by students that may have previous experiences, be they from secondary school or another college that say, “I have studied Spanish for years and don’t know how to speak or write it.” We also sought to present a reasonable alternative to the expensive textbooks and online packages that don’t seem to be practical or relevant. We sought to enhance second language learning by creating our own materials that take a new approach, the flipped classroom model, to learning a second language based upon the skills that we deem most useful and that will enable our students to confidently express themselves in Spanish–tú puedes con Yo puedo 2.
