Foundations of Open Educational Resources: A Professional Development Course
(View Complete Item Description)The Louisiana Library Network and ISKME have partnered to offer a seven week professional development course to high school librarians and dual enrollment teachers aiming to introduce participants to open educational resources (OER) and equip them with the tools to understand the benefits and challenges of using OER and how to articulate these to colleagues in order to advocate for integrating high-quality OER in courses. Each of the 6 initial modules includes activities to help participants reflect on what they learned and apply this knowledge in practical scenarios. The last module asks teachers and school librarians to pair up and collaboratively create a capstone project. During this course, participants will also have the opportunity to attend a presentation by Amelia Brister, Director of Library and Learning Resources at Louisiana Delta Community College focusing on on ways to elevate the role of the school librarian as instructional leader through the use of OER as well as on the challenges and opportunities of OER within the K-12 space. By the end of this course, participants should be able to:Define Open Educational ResourcesExplain the rationale for OER adoption and useUnderstand public domain versus Creative Common licensing and explain the differences between the six currently available Creative Commons licensesIdentify repositories and other resources for finding relevant OERUse tools and criteria to evaluate OERExplain ways in which school librarians can support and advocate for OER in their schoolEnhance their understanding of how to teachers and school librarians could collaborate around OER curation to support curriculum
