Communication in the Real World Textbook Review Rubric

Comprehensiveness

This textbook is very comparable to other Human Communication texts in regard to the comprehensive nature of the material. All of the areas that I would expect in this basic text have been covered and includes an index and glossary. There were even some additional chapters that are often left on the cutting room floor of a basic course text like this.

Content Accuracy

I find the content to be very accurate.  I often check for the author’s definition of “persuasion” and other key communication terms when assessing the accuracy of a basic course text. This text does a nice basic job of this simple task and then surprisingly went very In-depth. As I read this text, I was pleased with the level of accuracy. This textbook is professional and well-sourced.

Relevance Longevity

A lot of the content is considered timeless. Because of that, I would rate a majority of this textbook to have a high degree of relevance longevity. That being stated, it does appear that this text was last update in 2016. Some images could use a refresh and there could be several updates to help students better connect the concepts to our current moment in history.

Clarity

The language used in this textbook is very clear and could be easily understood by a wide variety of learning styles. I would also note that this textbook offers examples are exemplify ideals of communicating material in a concise, effective manner.

Consistency

This textbook is extremely consistent. Many OER texts are written by a team of authors and that leaves the document to feel disconnected and veering. This text reads of one author with one voice. Terms are used consistently.

Modularity

The material would be easily divisible or as a complete package. Each chapter is broken into subsections that could be used in part or whole. There are strong sections, numbers, and headings.  I mentioned earlier that this is a very comprehensive text and because of the modularity of it, it could be used as micro sections for another course or seminar.

Organization Structure Flow

The organization of Communication in the Real World makes sense and has a logical flow. There is nothing particularly innovated about the organization, but it is standard and for use in a basic communication course. It is about what I would expect.

Interface

The interface is high quality and feels like a real textbook. In addition, this text is available for download in various formats. This allows the student to select an interface type that aligns with their preference. Most importantly, it took one click to download the entire textbook. This makes it easy for students and increases the lowlihood that they will use it!

Grammatical Errors

I offer this piece of the review with a strong caveat; it is not my strength to search for grammatical errors. I read this text and found nothing problematic.

Cultural Relevance

Yes, this text does a lot more than most do. This does talk about issues of race/gender/class/sexual preference and that is a giant first step that the instructor can add texture to. However, this textbook is a few years old and could use an update to help better fit into the current narrative regarding diversity and inclusion. I found nothing problematic or insensitive.
