    Overview

    This is a review of an OER biology textbook.

    Comprehensiveness

    The text covers all areas and ideas of the subject appropriately and provides an effective index and/or glossary.

    This is a very comprehensive textbook that covers many aspects of biology. It is split up in different units, with each unit having multiple lessons. It is very modular. It is so comprehensive that it is intimidating. However, due to its modular design, each unit can be addressed in different types of biology classes, as well as relaveted classed like paleontology and historical geology, when needed.

    Content Accuracy

    Content is accurate, error-free and unbiased.

    Due to its large size and comprehensiveness, I am not an expert on many of the subjects covered in this book. However, the content that I am using for my courses (esp. the evolution and geology parts) are accurate.

    Relevance Longevity

    Content is up-to-date, but not in a way that will quickly make the text obsolete within a short period of time. The text is written and/or arranged in such a way that necessary updates will be relatively easy and straightforward to implement.

    The content of this book has a long longevity. This is in the 2nd edition, and I am sure a 3rd edition will come out at some point. However, I don't expect the science to change.

    Clarity

    The text is written in lucid, accessible prose, and provides adequate context for any jargon/technical terminology used.

    This textbook is written very clearly. The lessons are to the point and easy to read and understand.

    Consistency

    The text is internally consistent in terms of terminology and framework.

    Despite its comprehensiveness and size, the units are consistent with each other and easy to follow along.

    Modularity

    The text is easily and readily divisible into smaller reading sections that can be assigned at different points within the course (i.e., enormous blocks of text without subheadings should be avoided). The text should not be overly self-referential, and should be easily reorganized and realigned with various subunits of a course without presenting much disruption to the reader.

    This textbook is very modular. Individual units or lessons can easliy be adapted for a wide variety of classes. The book therefore is not only limited to biology classes, but also other disciplines that rely on biological concepts like historical geology or paleontology.

    Organization Structure Flow

    The topics in the text are presented in a logical, clear fashion.

    The oraniziational flow and structure is very logical.

    Interface

    The text is free of significant interface issues, including navigation problems, distortion of images/charts, and any other display features that may distract or confuse the reader.

    Different ways for accessing this book are available. The layout of the book is very pleasing and attractive. 

    Grammatical Errors

    The text contains no grammatical errors.

    I did not detect any grammatical errors.

    Cultural Relevance

    The text is not culturally insensitive or offensive in any way. It should make use of examples that are inclusive of a variety of races, ethnicities, and backgrounds.

    The subject matter lends itself to many different cultures.
